CHAPTER HISTORY
HOW THIS ALL STARTED
The Georgia-Carolina Association of Neonatal Nurses was chartered as a Regional Chapter of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses. This oganization represents the community of Neonatal Nurses that provides evidence-based care of high-risk neonatal patients. NANN is recognized as the expert voice that influences high standards of practice through advocacy, collaboration and leadership.

Several staff nurses from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA were the organizing members, thus creating a homebase for this chapter.  These visionary nurses began organizing this chapter in early spring 2006 and submitted a charter packet to the National Organization in March 2006. The GACAANN charter was approved by the National Board in April 2006. Augusta, GA is located on the  Savannah River boardering  two states, making it important to provide the opportunity for  Neonatal nurses in South Carolina and Georgia  to become a member of the chapter . At the time of the charter, the GACAANN chapter was the only chartered NANN Chapter in the States of Georgia and South Carolina.

Since chartering in April 2006, the chapter has had a huge membership drive and membership had grown 1000%. Officers were elected, short and long term goals were made, Committees were established and opportunities for CE credits were planned.

As a local chapter member, members have the opportunity to network with nurses from all over Georgia and South Carolina. The Chapter facilitates an exchange of information within the neonatal field, provides peer support and opportunities for leadership development and
personal growth. Chapter meetings  include CE credits with knowledgeable speakers in the field of Neonatal Nursing Practice.

As a new chapter, the opportunities are endless. The expectation that the quality of the neonatal nursing practice in South Carolina and Georgia will improve and nurses will become better leaders and advocates for our smaller population.
